Calcium Silicate Benefits : Turf

Calcium silicates is emerging as one of the most effective sources of silicon in agriculture. Silicon enhances soil fertility, improves disease and pest resistance, and increases photosynthesis.

The Results

In commercial applications of Flinders Calcium Silicate at one of the major turf farms in the Scenic Rim over the last 18 months they have observed the following results:

  • Higher yields due to less waste going to compost pile as integrity of slabs much stronger, holding together tighter as a result of greater quantity of thicker roots.

  • Shorter time between re-cuts

  • Thicker more vigorous roots

  • Longevity of the colour of leaf and shelf life after cutting increased due to thicker cell walls

  • We have growers using the Calcium Silicate on soils that crust badly – they are “Sugar coating” after seeding and watering it in. They are getting increased and more even germination results also saving money not having to keep the soil wet/soft till the seed emerges.

Other benefits of Flinders Calcium Silicate

  • Flinders Calcium Silicate also helps condition the soil making it easier to work. Replacing the need for additional gypsum or lime.

  • Increases tolerance to insects like turf mite.

  • Thicker cell walls and more vigorous roots assist turf having more tolerance to heat and frost stress.

  • Flinders Calcium Silicate helps alleviate aluminium toxicity in coastal soils.

What is “Flinders Calcium Silicate”?

Flinders Calcium Silicate is refined from 100% sustainable and recycled materials, containing no substances that will contaminate the soil. (SDS available). Flinders Calcium Silicate is a unique product having up to 270kg of silicon and 140kg of calcium per tonne.

Flinders Calcium Silicate is assisting growers with improved plant health and increased yields in many crops our agronomist can assist with application rates customised for your soils.

Application of Flinders Calcium Silicate

Application method Flinders Calcium Silicate can be applied preplant as a soil amendment. In the case of most turf growers, it is added after harvest once the ground is aerated then the “Flinders Calcium Silicate fine” is spread with the manure spreader at the rate of 1.2 to 1.5 m3 per hectare, then a mesh is dragged over the top to assist the product down the aeration dibbles.

When did you last apply agricultural silicon?

Flinders Calcium Silicate is being regularly applied by many turf growers in the Greater South East Queensland region. Call 1300 985 988 or visit flindersagricutlure.com to contact one of our field agronomists to discuss how Flinders Calcium Silicate could work for you!
